Vote for Harry Browne for President, 2000

Cartersville Daily-Tribute, October 30, 2000

Dear editor,

Georgians who want to vote for a third-party presidential candidate have an unusual opportunity this year. George Bush has Georgia sewed up by a virtually unbeatable lead.

This means that those whose hearts lie with a third party presidential candidate can vote their conscience -- without fear that their vote will swing the election towards either Gore or Bush.

I urge Bartow voters to consider Harry Browne, the Libertarian Party candidate for president.

The Libertarian Party is a real political party, not a billionaire’s plaything or a celebrity’s hobby. Over 300 Libertarians currently hold office -- more than all other third parties combined. Nearly 2,000 Libertarians are running for office across America -- again, more than all other third parties combined. The party is on the ballot in all 50 states. Libertarian Party membership has tripled since the last presidential election.

The essential Libertarian view is that people should be free to do as they wish with their own lives and property, so long as they don’t harm others. It’s a belief in limited government, personal and economic liberty, and individual responsibility. It’s a philosophy that the Founding Fathers would have recognized, because it is the vision at the very heart of the American Revolution.

While Gush and Bore argue furiously over their few trivial differences, Harry Browne is taking bold, pro-liberty positions that would have made the Founding Fathers proud.

Harry Browne is calling for the elimination of the income tax. This would be possible by simply limiting the federal government to those functions specifically enumerated in the Constitution. Imagine the joy of living in an America where you are free to spend, give or save your money as you -- not federal bureaucrats and politicians -- see fit. Where you never have to deal with the IRS again

Harry Browne is calling for the privatization of Social Security (while also protecting Americans currently dependant on Social Security). Social Security is a swindle. If Americans were free to control their own retirement dollars, they would have the opportunity to retire wealthy -- and pass that wealth onto their families -- instead of working all their lives for a small pittance that disappears at their death.

Harry Browne is calling for an end to the insane War on Drugs. Like an earlier generation’s Alcohol Prohibition, today’s Drug War is a disastrous failure that is destroying innocent lives, creating crime and disease, gutting our Bill of Rights, and wasting scarce law enforcement resources. Only Libertarian Harry Browne has shown the courage to tackle this issue head-on.

Harry Browne is pledged to defend our right to keep and bear arms. Gore is an avowed enemy of the Second Amendment. Bush is calling for further gun ownership restrictions.

Harry Browne wants to stop the Republican/Democrat foreign policy of ceaseless meddling in the internal affairs of other nations. Thomas Jefferson perfectly defined the Libertarian foreign policy: “Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations -- entangling alliances with none.” Playing policeman of the world is only making us enemies, costing American lives and dollars, and encouraging terrorism against Americans. Brown would bring U.S. troops back home, provide a strong defense for America, and let America lead the world not by military meddling but by being a shining example of a prosperous, free and peaceful country.

An article in Sunday’s Daily Tribune told of a new Brookings Institute analysis that says that it is “hard to imagine” that either Bush or Gore will cut the size and scope of government.

In other words, a vote for either Bush or Gore is a vote for bigger, more intrusive and more expensive government. Only a vote for Browne is a vote for smaller government, lower taxes, and individual liberty.

There are other Libertarian Party candidates in Georgia, too, and they are well worth voting for. Check the Libertarian Party of Georgia’s Web site: www.ga.lp.org.

Thank you,

James W. Harris
